From Alentejo to Broadway, the Symphony Orchestra explores a kaleidoscope of styles under the baton of Bar Avni, the winner of La Maestra 2024. Bernstein evokes the energy of New York in On the Town, a youthful musical that blends elements of jazz, symphonic and popular music, while Milhaud, under the spell of Brazil, creates a sonic cocktail of sambas, tangos and maxixes. Between them, the virtuosity of Marie-Ange Nguci and Sérgio Pacheco gives voice to Dmitri Shostakovich’s eclectic mosaic of styles. Opening the programme, Alentejo folklore is present in a work by the leading Portuguese symphonist of the 20th century.
